Katie's Story

My name is Katie and I'm a Primary School Teacher. I have been a helper in the Wigan HCPT Group 194 for more than 10 years.
Even though I have moved to Spain, HCPT - The Pilgrimage Trust still plays a big part of my life, and Easter 2008 was my 12th Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
I first got involved with HCPT when I was 16 years old when I met up with group leader, Sheila, at an informal meeting at her house. She told me all about the work of the Trust and showed me photographs from the previous trips. By the end of that first meeting, I couldn’t wait to go. My Nan and Auntie paid for my fare as a Christmas present.
A short while before our departure to Lourdes, my Nan fell gravely ill and was submitted to hospital. It nearly prevented me from going as I didn’t want to leave the country. I was reminded by my family, that, as my Nan was paying for it, that she would want me to go - so I did.
That was the beginning, and a decade later I’m still going back, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Just ask my Aunties, who have had to re-arrange their weddings around Easter, HCPT and me.
I have met so many lovely children, families and helpers over the past 10 years. HCPT is like a second family to me. I have also learnt a lot about myself, the type of person I am and the type of person I can be. I am now a Teacher and I would like to say that HCPT has helped me to get here - and plays a big part in my teaching.
I love going to Lourdes with HCPT. I love the children, the helpers, the people I see there each year, and the hard work which goes on while we are out there on holiday - a tough but extremely worthwhile holiday!!!
See you there next year
Katie xx
